"The Gift of Caring: Finding Joy and Meaning in Service of Others"
Kristen Swanson, PhD. RN, FAAN
Kristen Swanson, PhD, RN, FAAN is Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor of Nursing, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill; and Associate Chief Nursing Officer for Academic Affairs at UNC Hospitals. She is renowned for developing the Swanson Theory of Caring, used internationally to guide research, education and practice. Developed originally to provide a framework for helping families deal with miscarriage and the subsequent healing required for the parents and family, her model is now widely used to help caregivers frame the nature of their relationship with patients and families. Defining caring as "a nurturing way of relating to a valued other, toward whom one feels a personal sense of commitment and responsibility," Dr. Swanson has identified five behaviors that characterize caring: knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintaining belief. Engaging in these caring behaviors enables caregivers to help others achieve their goals while enhancing professional joy and satisfaction in one’s own life.
