Welcome back to this week’s fastest minute in construction, i’m Nate Beck, Daily Reporter staff writer
Let’s dig into the news
A $125 million project to redevelop an entire block on Madison’s Capitol Square took an initial step forward this week.
Madison’s Landmarks Commission on Monday voted to grant the project’s developer a variance that allows the plan to seek further approvals from they city and neighborhood groups.
Developer Urban Land Interests wants to tear up much of the city’s historic block 101, which sits on the capitol square.
While some buildings that date back more than a century will be torn down if the project proceeds, the developer plans to keep the historic facade of others to compliment a nine-story office tower above.
Approval from the city’s Landmarks commission means the project is moving forward. The development would have been dead in its tracks had the commission not signed off.

The UW System Board of regents was set to consider more than $200 milllion in campus construction projects Thursday.
Largest among these is a $121 million plan to build a new gymnasium that would replace an outdated facility.
In april, the regents also approved a $5 million plan to demolish the existing gym, with bids going up for that phase in June.
University officials expect to release bids for the construction of the new gym in November.
Contractors, however, must be take care not to disturb a Native amercian burial ground on the north side of the gym once construction begins.
That’s it for this week’s punch list, we’ll see you next week
