Bishop James Conley of the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln looks ahead to the Paschal Triduum.
The Paschal Triduum -- the most sacred days of our faith -- begins with Holy Thursday and the solemn celebration of the Lord's Supper. We are invited into the upper room with Jesus and his apostles where He will institute the Eucharist and the priesthood.
Jesus didn't give us a symbol that night; the Eucharist is not just a way we remember our Christ and our Lord. He gave us His entire self -- Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. To fail to recognize that truth is to fail to recognize the sacrifice He made for us -- and to fail to recognize Jesus Himself.
By instituting the Eucharist, Jesus also instituted the priesthood. Jesus doesn't just invite us to remember Him, but he commands us to re-present His sacrifice for all time. The priest in persona Christi—in the person of Christ— enables the sacrifice of Calvary to be made present on our altars Without the priesthood, there is no Eucharist; without the Eucharist, we have no Church.
