Regularly flushing your water heater removes sediment, improves efficiency, and extends its lifespan.
Tools Needed:
📖 Owner’s manual (review before starting)
💧 Garden hose
🪣 Bucket (if needed)
🔧 Adjustable wrench (if necessary)
🪛 Flathead screwdriver (for some gas models)
🧤 Gloves (optional)
Steps to Flush Your Water Heater:
1️⃣ Turn Off the Heater
-Gas: Turn off the gas supply and set the thermostat to “Pilot.”
-Electric: Shut off power at the circuit breaker.
2️⃣ Shut Off the Cold Water Supply
-Locate the cold water valve and turn it off.
3️⃣ Attach a Hose & Open a Faucet
-Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and direct it outside or into a drain.
-Open a nearby hot water faucet to allow air in.
4️⃣ Drain & Flush the Tank
-Slowly open the drain valve and let water flow out (caution: it’s hot!).
-Turn the cold water on briefly to flush out remaining sediment.
5️⃣ Close Valve & Refill
-Once water runs clear, close the drain valve and remove the hose.
-Turn the cold water supply back on and keep the hot faucet open until water flows steadily.
6️⃣ Restore Power or Gas Once Tank is Filled
-Electric: Turn power back on at the breaker.
-Gas: Restore the gas supply and relight the pilot if needed.
7️⃣ Check for Leaks & Test
-Inspect for leaks and, after 30 minutes, check if hot water is working.
How Often?
Flush every 6-12 months, or more often with hard water.
***If a heater hasn’t been flushed in over 7 years, flushing may cause leaks—consult a professional first. Always handle hot water with care!
