Today I spoke with Laurel Ebert, who grew up in nominally Christian environment and eventually got very serious about her faith in Jesus, but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.

We discussed many topics, including:

• Growing up believing in god but deeply wanting him to prove his existence.
• Fearing immense guilt from not living up to god's expectations.
• When her human father passed away when she was 5, seeing god as somewhat of a father substitute.
• Going to AA for a season and hearing the undercurrent of god as the "higher power."
• Starting to attend an Assemblies of god church.
• As she began to go through the entire Bible verse by verse, finding problematic, contradictory, bizarre, horrific, and misogynistic stories and teachings.
• Realizing that the Yahweh character resembles an abusive spouse and that the Bible is a bad moral compass.
• Finding that she had to bury her concerns to still remain in Christianity.
• Being disgusted by the behavior of Christians during Covid and the Trump presidency.
• Finding that after deconversion she was experiencing more peace and doing more for those in need than she'd ever done while a Christian.
• Enjoying the freedom after deconversion, for the first time, to think and talk honestly about crucial questions.
