The photograph of an angry Kashmiri girl in Srinagar pelting stones at the security forces during a street protest in 2016 had stunned the nation. Today 25 year old Afshan Ashiq is a professional footballer. She is the captain and goalkeeper of Jammu and Kashmir women football team. She was among the top sportsperson and athletes along with Virat Kohli and Milind Soman in the Fit India dialogue with Prime Minister Narindra Modi on September 24. But it has not been an easy journey for her. When she decided to make football her career there were no coaches and no infrastructure. There was no support for the football loving girl initially from her family but she was determined to pursue her dreams despite all difficulties. She has been practising in Srinagar inclement weather and shutdowns. She coaches many youngsters and is an inspiration for so many girls in Kashmir who want to play the sport.
