A year in the life of a winemaker, visited at different months and stages of the vineyard wine production. Mike Beneduce of Beneduce Vineyards, Pittstown, NJ talks with Hank Zona Of the Grapes Unwrapped explains all the necessary steps in producing wine. Mike Beneduce gives us a hands-on how-to on all phases of wine production from planning, pruning, planting, barrel work, harvesting, and pressing grapes.

In 2000, our family purchased this 51-acre farm to supply our retail garden center, Great Swamp Greenhouses in Gillette, NJ. Since then, we’ve planted over 20 acres of grapevines on a sunny hillside at the top of the property and transformed a large storage barn into a spectacular 7,000 sq. ft. winery.

The younger generation manages the new business, and while being the first family members to have formal education in the industry, they are proud to carry on a tradition as fourth-generation growers. Our family has made wine here since our ancestors emigrated from Italy in the early 1900s, and we’re focusing on producing premium quality wine and serving it in an entertaining and down to earth atmosphere. Our last name “Beneduce” means “Good Leader” in Italian, and we have our sights set on becoming leaders of quality winemaking in New Jersey and beyond.

As a family rooted in farming, we truly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard. Our ultimate goal at Beneduce Vineyards is to produce the highest quality wine possible from our family’s land. That means no cutting corners. We use innovative techniques that our Vineyard Manager learned while studying cool-climate grape growing at Cornell University. We do everything by hand so we know it’s done with care and it’s done right. And we do it sustainably so we know we’ll pass on healthy land to future generations.

Our main white varieties are Chardonnay, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer, while plantings of red grapes include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and an Austrian red named Blaufränkisch. We think the extra effort we put into caring for these vines makes a big difference in the bottled wine, and we hope you’ll agree.

Inside the winery, our approach is simple – do everything necessary to bring out the best in each individual batch of fruit. Our small lot production gives us the opportunity to hone in on the differences in each variety or blend, allowing us to create unique wines with distinct personalities that reflect both their vineyard source and our winemaker’s own style.

The winery itself is outfitted with some of the best equipment available to the industry, which allows for more gentle processing of the fruit and a focus on quality over quantity. We offer a range of wine styles to suit every palate, though our main concentration is on aromatically intense, food-friendly wines.
