The straw and water vocal warm-up exercise for the male vocal range is called a semi-occluded vocal tract exercise, SOVT for short.
It’ helps to improve vocal balance, improve a voice that feels fatigued and that to reduce vocal strain and can be anyone, especially by singers, actors, and public speakers. Some people who've had Covid-19 and might be challenged with what is called "covid voice", have benefited from this type of rehabilitation of dysphonia.

So to recap the benefits in detail, see below:
1. Reduces Vocal Strain
Blowing through a straw into water creates back pressure (intraoral pressure) that helps your vocal folds vibrate more efficiently without pressing too hard together. This reduces tension and risk of vocal damage.
2. Improves Vocal Fold Closure
The gentle resistance from the water helps train the vocal folds to come together cleanly and evenly, which improves vocal tone and control.
3. Encourages Better Breath Support
You must maintain steady airflow to keep bubbles consistent. This trains your *diaphragmatic breathing* and improves **breath control**, which is critical for speaking and singing.
4. Helps Reset Vocal Balance
This exercise balances the relationship between airflow, vocal fold vibration, and resonance. It’s often used in *vocal therapy* to rehabilitate tired or damaged voices.
5. Enhances Resonance and Projection
The vibration and back pressure help fine-tune your resonance, making your voice sound fuller and project better with less effort.
Here are the written instructions on how to do the method:
1. Fill a cup with about 1–2 inches of water.
2. Insert a narrow straw (like a coffee stirrer).
3. Blow gently and steadily into the straw, making consistent bubbles.
4. Glide up and down in pitch or vocalize short phrases as you bubble.
