🔎 Assistive Tech Review #1 from ATIA 2025 – WeWALK Smart Cane v2
Last week at ATIA, I had the chance to catch up with WeWALK co-founder Kursat Ceylan and several distributors who work with WeWALK. Adam Palmer from Palmer Vision, took the WeWALK Smart Cane v2 for a spin around the exhibit hall while we discussed its features and impact. Check out our conversation in the full video below!
🦯 What is it?
WeWALK Smart Cane v2 is an advanced mobility aid designed to enhance navigation for people who are blind or have low vision. It combines a traditional white cane with smart technology for greater independence and confidence.
👥 Who is it for?
WeWALK is a perfect solution for people who are blind or have low vision and want additional obstacle avoidance and navigation assistance beyond a standard white cane.
⚡ What does it do?
The Smart Cane v2 integrates obstacle detection, real-time navigation, AI and smartphone connectivity, for hands-free interaction.. It provides haptic feedback to alert users of objects above chest level, offers step by step navigation guidance, interactive Ai assistant and flash light.
📏 What is the form factor?
WeWALK is a lightweight white cane with a smart handle that houses the technology, including a speaker, microphone, tactile buttons, flashlights, and ultrasonic sensors. It maintains the familiar cane experience while adding advanced features. It comprises an Ambutech shaft and a proprietary handle made by WeWALK. This is a huge advantage because if a user breaks their shaft, they can easily replace just the shaft without having to buy a new WeWALK cane. Additionally, users can replace the cane tips if and as needed.
🛠 How does it work?
The cane pairs with a smartphone via Bluetooth and is controlled through the WeWALK app or voice asistant. Users can get turn-by-turn navigation, customize settings, and access mobility features through voice or the tectile buttons on the cane handle. The built-in speaker provides auditory feedback, and haptic vibrations indicate obstacles.
🌍 AIM (AI Mobility)
AIM is a technology developed by WeWALK in partnership with Microsoft to enhance mobility training for visually impaired individuals. Using WeWALK’s smart cane hardware and software, AIM collects and analyzes data such as cane angle, sweeping motion, confidence levels, and walking distance—but only if cane users elect to share this data. This information is visualized for both users and Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialists, allowing for remote monitoring, personalized training, and data-driven assessment of progress. Institutions can use AIM to track the long-term impact of their mobility programs through measurable metrics.
Have you tried or worked with WeWALK Smart Cane v2? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
