Embody the Divine Feminine with your #InnerGoddessTeam -- this week, we’re honoring Nokomis, the Algonquin grandmother goddess of the moon and corn. She is an earth goddess who gives nourishment to humankind in times of need. There are many variations of her mythology, but one of the most well-known is that she raises her grandson, Nanabozho who goes on to become the Ojibwe trickster figure and hero. You can call on her when you seek prosperity and sustenance on any level (https://tinyurl.com/2sffmaek)

Nokomis’s themes are prosperity, luck and providence. She is the ‘grandmother’ who supplies us with the earth’s riches -- when people are hungry, Nokomis provides food. When there is no food to be found, she offers her body in the form of corn.
In Ojibwe tradition, Nokomis is the daughter of the moon and fell down to earth, so she is sometimes translated as “daughter of the moon.” Eventually, she falls into the primordial sea, becomes pregnant and bears a daughter named Wenonah who allows herself to be seduced by Mudjekeewis (the spirit of the West Wind). Mudjekeewis abandons her, and Wenonah dies while giving birth to Nanabozho so Nokomis raises and educates her grandson.
Their story is memorialized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "The Song of Hiawatha" where Hiawatha is actually Nanabozho – “From the full moon fell Nokomis/Fell the beautiful Nokomis”, then she is seduced by the West-Wind and he abandons her when she gets pregnant: “Till she bore a son in sorrow/Bore a son of love and sorrow/Thus was born my Hiawatha.”
There are other variations of Nokomis’ story in other Native cultures… in the Iroquois version, the goddess is called Eithinoha by the Iroquois and she gives birth to a daughter, Oniata. I highlighted Oniata’s myth in my 3-10-25 #IGT video.
You can call on Nokomis to attract prosperity, when you are in need of an elder’s wisdom and nurturing, or when you need luck in some area of your life.
Here’s the Earth-centered chant that seemed to fit perfectly with different aspects of her mythology (I also shared it a year ago during harvest time for Hopi Blue Corn Maiden Sakwa Mana):
CHANT:
Earth my body, Water my blood,
Air my breath and Fire my spirit.
