Dr. Barrangou is a prominent food scientist with North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina and in the early 2000s, he came across something really cool in his research-mysterious CRISPR-Cas systems, that turned out to be useful as a special, tiny molecular scalpel to edit parts of the genome by removing, adding or altering sections of the genome. It was a discovery that changed science forever. Scientists around the world now broadly use this technology to advance our understanding of almost every organism on the planet.
