Описание: I'm hesitant to ever adopt any rose tinted nostalgia — that "the past was so much better" — especially because I consider myself a futurist and always seeking things that will help progress art and everyday living forward.

Yet, it is undeniable that late stage capitalism has dawned yet another layer of dystopia. The earlier 2000's web and its webpages were typically permeated with designs and ideas that were messy and slow to load, yet they were quite functional and promoted muscle memory because they rarely changed. Websites and apps in the 2020's have now been dominated by what I call "slippery design". What I mean is that "slippery design" makes it easy to perform unintended actions, does not operate intuitively on mobile devices, fights user decisions and gestures, and loads things or popups slowly so as to constantly have a webpage shift around erratically until everything settles. Most of these things are intentional and used by big companies to trick users into doing things that create 'growth'.

The web, as well as software, being frequently bought out and restructured by large corporations have ruined functionality and user experiences across the board, for things like Discord, Twitter, YouTube, and thousands of other things that people use every day.

When you begin to consider the entertainment industry, therein exists a whole other level of monotony. Movies and TV shows, in the era of online streaming, have been reduced to soulless franchises where the only profit incentive is to make way for a trillion sequels. Anything new that could come out is shut down by Netflix executives and dried up by investors who would rather see the 30th Star Wars movie exist. Rarely now do AAA studios produce video games that are fun or compelling. I think a lot of people would love more baseline functional gaming experiences, but instead everything is a gacha machine or a microtransaction or a DLC whore or an unfinished product sold on a massive scale, boasting crunch times and employee morale being torn to shreds. Most of the only good games coming out in the last five or more years have been made of small teams of indie developers who recognize that having Shitlord™3080 Raytracing graphics paired with a Hyperbingus Quadfunk Physics Engine (with a state of the art Sand Particle Simulation that allows for 50 quadrillion individual sand particles to be accurately modeled at once) isn't actually what makes a video game good.

To anyone who cares about art and functionality, as well as to people with accessibility needs to who face the otherwise unseen challenges of trying to navigate hostile digital design, it feels as if human expression is being held hostage by corporate middle aged white men grasping to the millions of dollars that they will never spend or donate (unless it's for a tax cut). Thus, magic seems to die.
