Hey kids! Welcome back to the x space!
We are here to teach you about being a good person!
Imagine you just got an ice cream cone on a really hot summer day
And when you got it, you were super excited to start eating it!
But then, you tripped on the sidewalk and it fell on the ground!
And the ice cream truck was already gone so you couldn’t get another one!
That would be awful!
And you would FEEL awful too.
Because you don’t get an ice cream cone anymore.
Well kids, that feeling is called disappointment and everyone feels it.
You can feel disappointed in a lot of places, like if you don’t get what you wanted for Christmas, or if you didn’t get picked to play kickball with your friends, or if you drop your ice cream cone.
But no matter where you feel it, you have to be able to handle it.
Being a good person is all about controlling your feelings!
So today, we are going to teach you how to handle disappointment in four simple steps.
Step 1: Let it sting
Having something happen to you like dropping your ice cream stinks!
And it hurts to think about all the good times you could have had with that ice cream cone.
Jumping around, going on the monkey bars, singing a song, and maybe even taking a math test.
It's ok to be sad and maybe even a little mad when something like that happens.
Just know, it isn’t a bad thing to be disappointed.
In fact, it's a good thing to feel disappointed!
Learning what it feels like and how to get over being disappointed as a kid will help you soooo much when you are a grown-up!
So if something makes you feel disappointed, let it sting for a second, and think about what could have been.
But then you have to move on! And that’s what our next step is!
Step 2: Learn from it
Let’s go back to the dropping your ice cream cone example.
When you drop your ice cream cone, it’s probably because you tripped on a curb or because you bumped into someone!
Those are both things you could keep from happening again!
So the next time you get an ice cream cone, you should be more careful and watch out for curbs and people!
That way, you won’t drop it again!
But you can learn from every other disappointment too!
If you get disappointed, make sure to sit back and think about what happened and WHY it happened, so you can learn from it!
And once you’ve learned from it, you are ready to move on to the next step!
Step 3: Stay positive
Even though something like dropping your ice cream cone is super sad, it’s important to stay positive!
Because no matter what happens, bad days don’t last forever!
And if you can keep that smile on your face, everything will seem so much better!
It’s true! Let’s try it together!
Ok! Everyone smile! Come on don’t be shy! Smile!
See, even if you were a little bummed out before, after smiling didn’t you feel a little better?!
Your attitude can change even the saddest of moments into the best!
That’s the power of positivity!
See kids, every situation can be looked at in two ways:
And we will show them to you using this simple glass of water.
Ok, so there are two kids here right?
They are both looking at the exact same glass of water.
But, Jonny sees the glass as half full, while molly sees it half empty.
They are both looking at the same glass of water! But one of them sees it positively and one sees it negatively.
When Jonny looks at the glass he is thinking of how awesome it is he has water still in the cup!
But when molly looks at it, she can only think of all the water that's missing from the cup.
So kids, be like Jonny, no matter if it’s a cup of water, or anything else. Look on the bright side!
Step 4: Forget about it!
The last step is the most important, Forget about it!
Once you’ve let it sting, learned from it, and stayed positive about it, now you have to forget about it!
It does you no good to keep thinking about things that disappoint you.
I mean, if you spent all day thinking about your dropped ice cream, you would only get more and more sad!
It’s best to just let it go, and move on.
So what you need to do is distract yourself!
Go and play games with your friends, or read a book, or even fly a spaceship!
Ok, so maybe you can’t fly a spaceship, but you can do a ton of other things to get your mind off the ice cream
Because that’s the easiest way to...Forget about it!
So kids, there are your four steps for handling disappointment.
Let it sting, learn from it, stay positive, and forget about it!
And remember kids, everyone gets disappointed in life, but that’s ok!
Just remember to keep your head up and never let anything keep you down!
Because when you handle disappointment, you can be a good person!
