Discographical information from Michael Thomas' excellent website, mgthomas.co.uk and "British Dance Bands On Record 1911-1945" by Brian Rust and Sandy Forbes.
"The Wedding Of The Painted Doll" was first published in 1929 and featured in the movie musicals "The Broadway Melody" and "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" amongst others, in the many years since.
Charles "Nat" Star (1886-1950) was a Polish-born musician and bandleader residing in England from an early age. He was particularly skilled in reed instruments and was an eager proponent of their inclusion in dance bands and music. He a very prolific sideman and bandleader in the London scene in the 1920's and 1930s and became director of music for The British Homophone Company between 1928 and 1934.
Despite a very busy career and many, many records under his own name and pseudonyms (as here) he did not appear to have achieved the fame and popularity as his contempories in the British dance scene. Due to ill health he retired around 1935.
"Sterno" was a British made label of the Homophone group between 1926 and 1935 that produced records mainly for sale through Marks and Spencer stores. The name derived from the founder, William Sternberg.
Recorded and processed from an original vintage 78 record by myself.
