Our masjids in America host a very large and diverse body of worshipers daily and that number multiplies during Ramadan. Islamic Centers also have many families who attend taraweeh/Qiyam and other evening events during Ramadan and children of all ages attend the masjid throughout the year as well.

Our masjid staff and volunteers constantly struggle with trying to inculcate basic expectations for congregational prayer such as straightening rows, filling gaps in between rows, maintaining silence and not using phones while the khutbah (sermon) is in progress etc.

These issues are much more prevalent in the women's prayer hall since many of our sisters come from countries where they didn't grow up attending congregational prayer.

In addition, masjids face many challenges due to unsupervised children in the masjid as well as with maintaining cleanliness in the masjid and especially in the prayer hall during Ramadan. When politely reminded of these basic etiquettes of attending the masjid, some attendees are offended.

As a result, Ramadan masjid teams find themselves struggling to inculcate communal expectations for masjid etiquette.
