The Fight for Kuhn's Brickyard, Gettysburg (tour date 9/14/2021)

Описание: The fight for Kuhn's Brickyard at the corner of Stratton Ave and Stevens Ave, to the north of town, is one of the lesser known engagements during the Battle of Gettysburg.

On the afternoon of July 1, 1863, MG Oliver Otis Howard, commanding general of XI Corps, Army of the Potomac, sent forward a single infantry brigade of four under-strength regiments numbering less than 1,000 men, to make a stand against a Confederate force three times its size - Avery's Tar Heels and Hays' Louisiana Tigers.

The Union brigade, under 23-year old Colonel Charles Coster, doubled through the town and went immediately into action at Kuhn's Brickyard, suffering heavy casualties under an overwhelming onslaught. One regiment, the 154th New York, suffered 77 percent casualties in the engagement. When survivors of the regiment regrouped on East Cemetery Hill on the evening of July 1, 1863, there were just 5 officers and 27 men present for duty.

The sacrifice of Coster's brigade gave the survivors of Barlow's and Schurz's shattered divisions a brief opportunity to fall back through the town and regroup on East Cemetery Hill.
