Humpback whale freed from shark nets in four-hour rescue operation

Marine teams from the Sea World Foundation battled strong winds and waves to cut the 26-foot-long whale free. This is the first whale rescued from shark nets in the 2026 migration season, after at least 13 whales were entangled in shark nets in 2026.

Queensland's controversial shark nets have consistently come under fire for killing marine wildlife, with many organisations accusing the nets of making the problem worse by attracting sharks to the dead and dying wildlife entangled in the nets.
