I bought a secondhand tablet to read on. Forty-three dollars. It arrived in more bubble wrap than seemed necessary.
Three days later it started suggesting a phrase I never typed.
The light in the hallway was already off when I got home.
I reset the keyboard. Reinstalled the app. Did everything you’re supposed to do. The phrase came back every time. Then it started speaking out loud. Then it sent a message — at 4:17 in the morning, while I was asleep — to someone I hadn’t spoken to in eleven years. A number I have never had in any device I’ve owned.
The message wasn’t wrong. That’s the part I’m still sitting with.
This is Part 1. I’m telling you what I know. At the end there’s one thing I can’t explain — not what the device did, but who had it before me. And why they let it go.
