"Bo Goldman helped shape modern American screenwriting with stories that were sharp, emotional, and deeply human. Born Robert Spencer Goldman in New York City in 1932, he grew up around Broadway thanks to his producer father, though money was tighter than appearances suggested. While attending Princeton, he ran the Triangle Club and even landed a show on The Ed Sullivan Show. A newspaper typo turned “Bob” into “Bo,” and the name stuck for life.
After college, Bo served three years in the U.S. Army on Enewetak, a remote atoll used for nuclear testing. Back home, he wrote Broadway lyrics before moving into live television at CBS, learning the craft under legendary producer Fred Coe. Encouraged by Burt Lancaster, he shifted to film, and his screenplay Shoot the Moon put him on the map.
He won Academy Awards for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Melvin and Howard, later writing Scent of a Woman and Meet Joe Black. Bo Goldman passed away in 2023 at ninety, leaving behind a legacy of intelligent, character-driven cinema."
