• HISTORY OF WAR
In the brutal winter of 1944 on the Eastern Front, more than 60,000 German soldiers found themselves trapped in one of the most dramatic encirclements of World War II — the Korsun Cauldron.
As the Soviet Red Army launched a massive offensive across the frozen fields of Ukraine, two German corps of the Wehrmacht suddenly found themselves surrounded by an iron ring of tanks, artillery, and relentless infantry.
Inside the pocket near Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi, the situation quickly turned into a nightmare. Temperatures dropped far below freezing. Ammunition and food ran low. Soviet artillery pounded German positions day and night while Soviet armor tightened the noose.
What followed was a desperate fight for survival.
Starving, freezing, and under constant attack, the trapped soldiers prepared for a last gamble — a massive breakout attempt through Soviet steel. Under cover of darkness, thousands charged through snow-covered fields, facing machine guns, artillery fire, and collapsing ice on frozen rivers.
Many would never make it out.
The Battle of the Korsun Pocket became one of the most dramatic and chaotic battles on the Eastern Front, showing the brutal reality of modern warfare and the relentless power of Soviet offensives in 1944.
This is the story of the men trapped inside the Korsun Cauldron — and the desperate battle to escape.
