Louis-Hector Berlioz
(11 December 1803 – 8 March 1869)
was a French Romantic composer, best known for his compositions Symphonie fantastique and Grande messe des morts (Requiem). Berlioz made significant contributions to the modern orchestra with his Treatise on Instrumentation. He specified huge orchestral forces for some of his works, and conducted several concerts with more than 1,000 musicians. He also composed around 50 songs.
Symphonie fantastique is an epic for a huge orchestra. Through its movements, it tells the story of an artist's self-destructive passion for a beautiful woman. The symphony describes his obsession and dreams, tantrums and moments of tenderness, and visions of suicide and murder, ecstasy and despair.
The Magical Music Box, more commonly known as The Music Box was a British children's magazine. It ran from 1993 to 1997 in a series of 52 monthly serialisations.
The aim of the magazine was to introduce children into classical music and to popularise this form of music among the younger generations.
The stories followed the fictional adventures of two siblings, Sarah and Jamie who find a magical music box through which they are able to enter other worlds, most commonly as spectators.
The stories were generally related to other children's tales or fables.
