Barah Maha — a divine composition by Guru Arjan Dev Ji — invites us to pause at the beginning of each month and reflect on the passage of time, the turning of seasons, and the state of our own hearts.
In this monthly series, we humbly offer an English translation with gentle explanations, opening the door for seekers to experience the spiritual depth of Barah Maha, even if they are unfamiliar with Punjabi or Gurmukhi.
The third stanza of this bani asks us to use this month of Vaisakh to take the spiritual and physical steps to shorten the distance between us and the Almighty. Through constant meditation, staying away from falsehood, and coming into the sanctuary of the true Guru, we can unite ourselves with the Divine Creator.
This month is particularly special as it marks the creation of the Khalsa Panth - the formalised brotherhood of the Sikh community.
