Tōshōdai-ji is a Buddhist temple in Nara founded in the 8th century by Jianzhen, a Tang Dynasty monk from China.
Invited by the Japanese court, Jianzhen crossed the sea five times to establish a complete Buddhist ordination system based on Tang Dynasty Vinaya law. During these journeys, he lost his eyesight, but eventually arrived in Japan in 753.
At Tōshōdai-ji, he founded Japan’s first officially recognized ordination platform, shaping the institutional structure of Japanese Buddhism and influencing major temples across Nara and beyond.
This video is a historical documentary style about Jianzhen, Tang-era Buddhist systems, and the cultural transmission between China and Japan.
