How to Stop Instagram Spying on You

Instagram is tracking more than you think. But, does it actually bother you?

If you’ve ever noticed eerily accurate ads or wondered how Instagram knows what you’ve been googling, it’s because of an Instagram setting called ‘your activity off Meta technologies’.

When this setting is turned on, Instagram (and other apps owned by Meta) can track your activity across other websites and apps. That means they’re collecting data on what you click on, shop for, watch, and read, even outside of Instagram.

Some people don’t mind this because it gives them more “relevant” ads.

Others hate it though because they want more privacy and control.

If you’re in the second group, here’s how to stop it in your Instagram settings:

1. Go to your Profile and tap on the hamburger menu to open your Instagram settings
2. Go to your Accounts Centre
3. Tap on Your information and permissions and then Your activity off Meta technologies
4. At the bottom you’ll see Manage Future Activity and there you can turn on Disconnect future activity

It won’t affect how you use Instagram day to day, but it will limit how much of your data they collect.
