During World War II, U.S. Marines deployed specialized "War Dog Platoons" featuring Dobermans and German Shepherds to counter deadly Japanese ambush tactics and nighttime infiltrations across the Pacific theater. These highly trained canines served as scouts and sentries, detecting hidden snipers, warning of ambushes, and clearing caves and pillboxes—allowing Marine infantry to operate with unprecedented safety and confidence. The program proved devastatingly effective during the Battle of Guam in 1944, where 60 dogs with their handlers are credited with saving hundreds of Marine lives, though at a heavy cost with nearly half the dogs becoming casualties.
