This year, Valentine’s Day — the day our culture puts love on display — and Ash Wednesday fall close enough together that the contrast is hard to ignore.
On the one hand, the world constantly throws messages at us about “love” — romance, excitement, being chosen.
On the other hand, we’re invited to receive ashes and to hear words that are not flattering at all: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
At first glance, these two days seem to have nothing to do with each other.
