Blast - Damned Flame / Hope (1973) recorded 29 August 1972. Belgian proto-punk and early heavy metal band from Mons, Blast was formed in 1971 by Toni Colonius (b. 1 January 1952) on guitar and Antoni Cucchiara (b. 9 November 1952) on bass and vocals. The two first met at l'École Technique de Hornu and had previously been in bands together: Sixty-Toes (1966–1969) and The Oaks (1969–1970). In 1971, they recruited Mick Jacobs (b. 13 February 1954) on drums. Blast performed live between 1971 and 1972 before recording their first single, "Damned Flame" b/w "Hope", on 29 August 1972. The single was released in 1973 on Majestic Records, with no more than 500 copies pressed. It was produced by Michel Chevalier, known for his work on Resurrection of Vacation by Vacation (1971), which featured a similar cover art font to Blast’s single. According to liner notes written by bassist and vocalist Antoni Cucchiara in the 2015 Death Vault reissue of their first single: “Our public had different reactions. First of all, they were surprised. For some people, we weren’t hip enough; for others, what we did was genius.”
In 1974, Toni Colonius left to complete one year of military service ultimately leading to the rest of the band dissolving. Drummer Mick Jacobs later went on to collaborate with Plastic Bertrand from 1980 to 1982.
Posterity will have it that these guys are recognized as forerunners of the hardcore punk movement just like "Los Saicos" were later assessed as forerunners to the punk movement.
