Hello to all my Aquascaping On The Fly Squad!
This video will deal directly with the 3 Distinct Colors of the 1st Generation offspring from our Blue Velvet Shrimp housed in the "Black Fish" 20G Long Tank.
Backstory.... I ordered online via a shrimp supplier from Amazon back in July ~ 20 Blue Velvet shrimp. The shipping took over 7 days and when the package arrived, I immediately knew the container was way too hot.... the ice pack had melted, and its contents were too warm as well as the water that the shrimp were in. I took extreme care and acclimated over the next 2 hours; but fully aware that there would be deaths. That being said 18 died within 24 hours; leaving me with only 2 juvenile shrimp but alas there was a silver lining.... one of the females had given birth during transit and I could see about 10 sets of black eyes... not the bodies but the eyes! So at least I knew we hopefully would have some extra survivors! The company also did refund the DOA's.
Fast forward to now.... I have thrice counted 26/27/27 small shrimps but alarmingly there were in varying degree of colors: Black, Dark Red and Pale Blue.
In doing research into Blue Velvets, I did see that they were originally a cross between Red Cherry & Blue Dream Neocaridina and as a result can in the early stages of selected breeding could show varying colors. I however, was seeing Black as well and concluded that my supplier did not carry a High Grade of Neocaridina as stated online. As Culling/i.e. Selective Breeding should have eliminated all colors apart from the desired Blue... and by the way Blue Velvet are AKA Blue Jelly.
One of my frequent commenters suggested that I separate my 3 colors out in order to maintain the desired coloring going forward in the build. I did just that!!!
I was able to successfully remove and re-home the following:
8 Black.... moved to the 20G Long tank "Tree of Life"
17 Red.... moved to the 10G "Garden of Eden"
8 Blue.... moved to the 10G "Turtle in Motion"
Along with keeping the original 2 juveniles that are now adults... along with their newest offspring.... that's right Black Fish has more babies coming aboard!
So, jump onboard and see how I do as a Selective Breeder of Blue Velvet's that veer off of the traditional "Blue" coloring and try and maintain a Red/Black & Varied Blue variety in 3 separate tanks.
