Millennium Gardens, a community garden in the northeast area of the city, was created in 2002 for seniors living in the local area. Offering raised boxes for easy access and ground level beds for larger area gardening, rainwater harvesting, running water, composting facilities, benches, picnic tables, storage shed and gazebo. All these spaces serve those who garden in this community gathering area. The “outdoor senior centre” allows many apartment bound seniors to get their hands dirty and produce amazing crops for their own use and to support the Winnipeg Harvest Grow-a-Row program. Master Gardener, Ed, cares for one plot trialing for the university and harvesting for the Grow-a-Row. The gardens have won numerous awards including Winnipeg in Bloom, the City of Winnipeg Mobility Award and the Community Builder Award. In summer 2020 the garden underwent another renovation to make the garden more accessible to people with wheelchairs and aging backs. As the community has aged and changed, so has the garden. This episode is about how gardening can build and hold community
This garden has become a haven for naturalized plantings and pollinators as well. Master Gardener, Kiyoko, is the driving force behind the native plantings in the Millennium Gardens. With an eye to the future, and sustainable environmental practices, the Millennium Gardens recently received Canadian Wildlife Federation certification. As the first certified community garden in Winnipeg, we are a role model for the community. We provide food, water, shelter and space for wildlife. The gardens are enhancing our support for wildlife by increasing the number of native plants every year. Use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers is avoided. Millennium Gardens continue to build links with other sustainable garden groups in the city; Prairie Naturals, East Kildonan Garden Club and Sustainable South Osborne Community Cooperative gardens, and collaborating with national and international groups; Manitoba Master Gardener Association, WWF, Douglas Tallamy and the David Suzuki Butterfly Rangers.
