Review:
Bellucci, the Busoni of the 21st century, who I hope will give us further proof of his immense talent.
In addition to the five concertos, here we have a wide variety of cadenzas and codas, recorded with the orchestra during various performances and in dedicated studio sessions (for the alternative cadenzas).
And there are cadenzas I didn't even know, aside from those by Beethoven and Glenn Gould, by Reinecke, and by Bellucci himself. But Berhard Stavenhagen is a complete stranger to me.
And I didn't even remember any cadenzas by Brahms or Fauré for these concertos. Not to mention Busoni...
Giovanni Bellucci plays with a freedom of expression—I wouldn't even say touch—that leaves you speechless.
There's the same genius as other composers in his way of expressing himself.
The ease with which he changes pace, tempo, and dynamics are unheard of.
There are, it's true, rare excellent interpretations of these concertos; we've heard some of them recently.
But they're ordinary interpretations after this... reading.
For some, it will be disconcerting. Even heretical. But we're at the monumental, one of the most engaging moments in the international music scene in recent decades.
I don't think I'm speaking in hyperbole. Anyone who listens to these pages reinterpreted by Bellucci will understand, even if they find them detestable.
For me, more than just an epiphany, it was finally finding an alternative to Backhaus's legendary reference edition from the 1960s. Finally.
