Walking the line is a new series I am starting, where I am walking the lengths of mothballed railway lines across the world.
All old photos are from http://disused-stations.org.uk, and I also got some of my information on stations from here.
Episode 1 - The Leamside Line
Once the main line from London to Edinburgh, the route was quickly overshadowed by the new line through Durham city, which took most through passenger trains. Despite this, local traffic lingered on until the 1960s. The line remained an important freight corridor, despite dminished passenger service, throughout its life, serving the collieries of the Durham coal field, to the shipyards of Wearside and Tyneside, it certianly helped keep North East industry going.
This is part 1 of my journey, from Belmont to Bowburn. Part 2 will be coming soon, which is Belmont to Victoria Viaduct, and finally part 3, Victoria Viaduct to Pelaw, where things get really interesting...
