At the time of making this the Syrian Air Force had just been destroyed on the ground by the IDF/AF. This therefore seemed like a good moment to look back over the history of one of the most active air forces of the Cold War era. To do this, I've gone back to the dawn of aviation in the country, then the French Mandate, World War 2 before independence and the wars with Israel.
As ever, I've concentrated mainly on aircraft and, where possible some relevent statistics about the performance of the SyAAF. But just a reminder that this is not a political channel and I have no side to take when it comes to the various conflicts in the region. Please keep any comments polite and constructive.
