Yes, we're going to do some laryngeal massage in this video! Let's dive in.
0:00 - Welcome to Lesson 4! This is going to be a quick and dirty (but gentle!) tension-release sequence.
0:12 - Forehead and temples.
0:37 - Using the pressure of your pointer fingers to clear the sinuses next to your nose. It can be helpful to hum or buzz here too.
1:26 - Using the pressure of your pointer fingers to clear the sinuses at the center of your eyebrows. It can be helpful to hum or buzz here too.
1:43 - Jaw massages in a circle.
2:01 - Keep in mind that the fibers of your jaw muscles run down and back, so you can draw your hands down in that direction.
2:17 - The first step of laryngeal massage, drawing your hands down the front of your neck.
2:40 - The second step of laryngeal massage, wiggling your larynx side-to-side.
(If you're curious to learn all five steps of laryngeal massage, check out my popular YouTube video about it here: • Full Laryngeal Massage . That being said, when you're recovering from having lost your voice, I think it's best to be gentle and just focus on the first two steps.)
2:53 - It's recommended to do this sequence twice a day to notice a reset. And let's add one more exercise for the neck...
3:13 - A final practice for the sub-occipital muscles at the back of the neck.
Have a question or want to share how this is going for you? Leave me a comment - I'd be happy to hear from you!

Have you been experiencing voice loss? Perhaps because you got sick with COVID-19, RSV, the flu, or another virus. Perhaps because you’re dealing with the ongoing symptoms of long COVID. If you’re struggling with coughing and wheezing, this can lead to a weak voice and trouble sustaining sound or a note. And certainly if you’re experiencing vocal fatigue, tightness, and tension, this training is for you.
Join Elissa Maas Weinzimmer, vocal health educator and founder of Voice Body Connection, for a five video series that will walk you through what to do when you lose your voice. You can use this sequence as a post-COVID vocal health protocol, a voice & immune system reboot, and a daily tension release practice. We’ll cover how to steam your vocal cords, a practice to release lung tension so you can breathe better, a sequence of simple tension release and laryngeal massage exercises, and some gentle humming and vocalizing to get your voice back in shape.
