Описание: This talk explores humanity’s shifting place in the cosmos, from ancient sky-gazers who saw earth as the universe’s center, to the heliocentric model, to our modern understanding that the sun is just one star among billions in a galaxy that is itself one of countless others. By reflecting on eclipses and the humbling vastness of space, Darius Motthagy invites us to rethink our assumptions, recognize that neither our location nor our life is uniquely privileged, and adopt a broader, more grounded perspective on our place in the universe. Darius Mottaghy studied physics at RWTH Aachen and Imperial College, London, earning his diploma with a study on ozone measurements in the lower troposphere at FZ Jülich. During his doctoral research in geosciences, he focused on modelling heat transfer in the upper crust, studying the influence of structure, fluid flow and paleoclimate.
After nine years working on shallow and deep geothermal energy at a consulting firm, he became a professor at FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences in 2015. He teaches mathematics and physics to Bachelor engineering students and topics in geothermal energy to Master’s students, while continuing research in geothermics, borehole climatology, and geothermal energy.
For many years, he has also been an instructor at the local observatory, an educational institution of the VHS Aachen. Passionate about teaching both students and the public, he sees it as both a gift and a responsibility to accompany learners in their academic journey and actively contribute to their education. He enjoys illustrating mathematical and physical concepts through examples from astronomy and astrophysics.
