While legalizing MSP can provide a safety net for some, Sharma stresses that it benefits only a fraction of farmers, leaving small, marginal, and landless farmers vulnerable. His vision for the future of Indian agriculture goes beyond MSP: he advocates for treating farming as a profitable industry, establishing a dedicated Commission for Farmers’ Income and Welfare, promoting self-sufficiency, and creating policies that genuinely support farmers’ livelihoods. Sharma also highlights how countries like France have successfully strengthened their agriculture through targeted support and long-term planning, while cautioning that India cannot directly compare itself to the United States in terms of farming practices, scale, or government backing. For him, India must develop its own context-specific solutions to ensure sustainable and profitable farming.
