Tour and review of a 2019 Ford Fusion Energi Titanium. The Energi is Ford Motor Company's plug-in hybrid variant of this mid-sized family sedan.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the Energi offers the same Fusion look we are all accustomed to, refreshed slightly for 2019, the outgoing model year of this vehicle. Exterior highlights include a new grille design, updated full LED headlights/daytime running lights, and mirror puddle lights. From the interior standpoint, the aesthetic is consistent with the rest of this fusion generation, with unique highlights including the Energi specific gauges, and Sport Bucket Seats.
The vehicle only comes in the Titanium trim for this model year and boasts a host of great features. From a comfort standpoint, the fusion has Heated and Cooled Seats, Automatic Climate Control, Power Adjustable Seats, and a Sunroof. A further highlight of the interior space is the Auto-Dimming mirrors, both the rear-view and driver's side view mirrors.
The vehicle is equipped with Ford's typical SYNC 3, plus some electric-specific features. This causes the instrument cluster to be a little more advanced than a base Fusion, giving a lot more insight into energy usage and efficiency. The vehicle is also equipped with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, an absolute must in a modern vehicle.
From a safety perspective, the vehicle features Ford's CoPilot 360 suite, which includes Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise with Stop and Go, Forward Collision Warning, and Blind Spot Monitoring (BLIS). These combine to provide a relaxing and low effort commuting experience knowing you have the piece of mind.
In terms of practicality, the Energi provides plenty of space on the interior to comfortably move 4-5 people, but sadly not enough room to move things due to the severely constrained trunk space, which is home to the battery.
While the performance of a hybrid is not it's selling point, and the Energi is NOT a fast car, but it pleasantly surprises with plenty of low-end pep due to electric motor torque. but is abysmally slow at highway speeds. From a braking perspective, the Energi offers a combination of traditional and regenerative braking, which can result in an unpleasant transition at times but helps with range.
This results in an overall driving experience that can be fun at very low speeds, but this is not a race car. The true novelty of driving the Energi comes from challenging yourself with efficiency instead of speed. In my ownership over 1500 miles, I've averaged 88 miles per gallon. As a commuter car, the Energi provides an extremely relaxing ride, especially with stop and go cruise to do the heavy lifting, and the heated/cooled seats provide desired butt temperature.
Overall Pros:
Efficiency
Comfort
Safety tech
Amenities
Cons:
Lack of space
Lack of speed
Behind the game compared to other EVs
Last year of production
