Martin Couney, famously known as the “Incubator Doctor,” was a true pioneer in saving premature babies. Born in 1869 in Prussia, Couney was a German-Jewish immigrant who popularized incubators to the United States at a time when hospitals ignored premature infants. While most doctors believed these tiny babies were “weaklings” destined to die, Couney proved them wrong by giving them care, warmth, and a chance to survive.
From 1903 to 1943, Couney ran incredible infant incubator exhibitions at Coney Island and other amusement parks. Parents didn’t pay a cent, the public covered the costs by visiting the exhibits for just 25 cents. The fees funded round-the-clock care, nutritious meals, and trained nurses who nurtured the babies as if they were their own. His shows were not just entertainment, they were life-saving NICUs before hospitals ever embraced this technology.
Couney’s innovative work saved around 6,500 lives and inspired the modern neonatal intensive care units we know today. Despite being shunned by the medical establishment, his dedication and compassion changed the course of American medicine forever. Families and former “Coney Island babies” still remember him as a true hero who gave them the gift of life.
