Would you go shopping in a dangerous East End market, notorious for dirt and peddlers of stolen goods? Rosemary Lane is where the poor both sold old rags and clothed themselves. It's character was influenced by shanty Georgian wooden housing thrown-up hastily around courtyards by carpenters on the cheap. As Petticoat Lane rose in popularity in the Victorian era, so Rosemary Lane fell – the neighbourhood descending into slum conditions. Take a trip back in time with Henry Mayhew to see first-hand what it was like to live and shop here within the myriad of dark and dangerous alleyways.
