"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost." (John 19:30)
The words “It is finished” in this verse are translated from the Greek word “Tetelestai”; a word that appears in 4 other places in the New Testament, translated in different ways. Looking at these translations can help us understand the meaning of these words on the cross:
“Fulfilled” (Luke 2:39) - We see not only all the Old Testament types and figures fulfilled in Christ, but also the law and will of the Father perfectly fulfilled.
“Made an end of” (Matthew 11:1) - Through Christ’s death on the cross, He has made an end to our sin. We are now free from guilt and condemnation.
“Paid” (Matthew 17:24) - Christ has paid a debt we could never pay, and He has paid it in full on the cross.
“Accomplished” (John 19:28) - Christ on the cross has accomplished His purpose of coming into the world, and has obtained salvation for us.
