C.P.E. Bach: "Farewell to My Silbermann Clavichord" (Abschied vom Silbermannschen Clavier, in einem Rondeaux), W. 66 (on Sperrhake clavichord). In 1781 C.P.E. Bach sold his favorite Silbermann clavichord to Dietrich Ewald von Grotthuß, a nobleman from Lithuania, and wrote this affecting piece as a farewell to his instrument---perhaps slightly tongue-in-cheek? It is always a little hard to tell when C.P.E. Bach was being serious! At any rate, the piece demonstrates the expressive style that C.P.E. was known for, and the "bebung" (vibrato) is even specifically notated by three horizontal dots with a slur above them over certain notes. (When you see my hand shaking, I hope you can hear the bebung, and don't suppose that I am having a fit of nerves.) This is a more difficult piece to pull off than it might seem, and I don't think I have done it justice.
