Super Decathlon flight over Bergen and Herdla, WW2 Luftwaffe Airbase in Norway. Fast motion in parts

Описание: This was a brush up flight in the SuperDecathlon.

More than 5 months had passed since my last flight in the decathlon and it was time to go up again. So when I was surprised by nice weather in the morning I went for it. I would rather have done an aerobatic training flight with an instructor, but at such short notice none of them were available. I did a couple of very lazy (non-aerobatic) eights and some steep turns at 2500 feet before two simulated forced landings at what must once have been RWY19 at Flugplatz Herdla.

Herdla on Askøy, just north of Bergen, Norway was a Luftwaffe airbase in Nazi occupied Norway. The germans had Bf-109s, FW-190s, Fiesler Storchs and more here from 1940-1945. Serious air battles took place in the area. The base was bombed by the RAF during operation archery https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operati... 27 December 1941, and the fighters from Herdla were scrambled whenever allied airplanes attacked german convoys, U-boot pens in Bergen and other german targets in western Norway. The biggest air battle involving FW-190 fighters from Herdla was "Black friday" on February 9 1945. On this day the Luftwaffe shot down a many allied fighters around Førde to the north of Herdla. This was a really grim friday for the allies, thus the name.

We have been banned from landing at Herdla since the late 1990s because the area is an important stopover for migratory birds and many species breed close to the old runways, so now the old runways are just gracing ground for cattle. Landing here now would be a bumpy experience and you would definitely have to wash cow-dung from your plane afterwards.

I care a lot about the birds and their well being, but Herdla is also an important historic place for WW2 aviation and it should be possible for limited flying outside the mating season. Herdla is a fantastic place. Hopefully at some time in the future we can land warbirds here without disturbing the birds. Piper cubs and Fiesler Storchs really dont make a lot of noise, so it should not be a threat to the birds if the proper precautions are taken.

For now the regulations are enforced too strictly for that to take place. :-(

This film was originally made for my own pleasure only, so the music is mostly a mix of some of my favorites, but then I decided to sneak in my own "one-take" recordings on the guitar while my kids are playing in the background.
