Despite getting lost a couple of times on my way through Hovingham Park looking for the attractive little Pickering Bridge, this was a lovely walk full of historic interest and beauty. I particularly enjoyed walking beside Marrs Beck which runs through Brookside as seen on the thumbnail.
Hovingham is situated in an idyllic location in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire. A stream runs through the northern edge of the village, complete with a ford adding to the picturesque nature of the village. Hovingham lies 19 miles north of the city of York, near the market towns of Helmsley and Malton on the edge of the Howardian Hills.
Hovingham Hall sits proudly in the centre of the village and has been the home of the Worsley Family since 1563. They were an old Lancashire family; legend says they were descended from Elias, a giant who died fighting on the Crusades. Thomas Worsley became a close friend of King George III and is reputed to have taught him to ride. Worsley, the town from which they took their name, is now a suburb of Manchester. The attractive Palladian house was designed and built by Thomas Worsley between 1750 and 1770. A unique feature of the grade 1 listed building is that the main entrance is through a high roofed covered riding school, once used for training horses.
Sir Thomas Worsley was also responsible for the construction, architecture and consistency of most of the village. On the front lawn of the house lies the cricket ground, which is reputed to be the oldest continuously played on private cricket ground in England. Cricket has been played there since at least 1858 when a Hovingham team, 22 strong, took on an All England team and lost.
All Saints church is of Saxon origin. The majority of the present building dates back to 1860 when it was rebuilt around the tower, which was built in the 11th century.
The reredos inside the church is a stone slab carved in about 800 AD, but very worn from previously having been set in the south wall of the tower. It depicts eight human figures under an arcade, with a plant scroll at the bottom, incorporating carvings of birds. It is described by the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture as one of the "most complex and ambitious" carvings of its period in the area, and possessing an "ease and delicacy".
The Mausoleum in the cemetary was built around 1750 with steps that lead down to a gabled porch containing a Chi Rho symbol, one of the earliest forms of the Christogram which dates back to the 3rd century.
The ornamental Pickering Bridge that leads over a small waterfall in Hovingham Park was built by Thomas Worsley VI in 1766.
