In May 2024, I hiked the Sierra Buttes in Tahoe National Forest. Much of the trail was still snow-covered, but with a pair of micro-spikes, it was entirely manageable. This hike was part of a larger Northern California trip that included other northern Sierra trails, as well as several in the southern Cascades. By the end, the Sierra Buttes stood out as one of my all-time favorite hikes. Tucked away in the Lost Sierra—roughly an hour and a half north of Lake Tahoe—this area offers a quieter, lesser-known corner of the Sierra Nevada that feels much different from the region’s more crowded destinations.
