It's summer in north Germany and we're off to the coast of the north sea. There is a historic lighthouse called Overeversand in the Nationalpark Wattenmeer that I think could make a really good subject for landscape photography.
The idea with this video is to share some simple tricks & tips I've learned over the years photographing lighthouses.
01:10 - Square up your subject from one of the two side angles of the lighthouse. Use the sun to your advantage. In this case it made for a good silhouette.
02:08 - Go wide and include foreground interest. Also focus stacking will work in your favour here.
03:30 - Straight on composition looking directly at the lighthouse via the sea bridge / pier or path leading towards it. Usually great leading lines and natural balance.
04:40 - Scan your surroundings and if the light is popping off just stop and take your photo where you think it looks good. Simplicity is often the best bet.
05:50 - Reflections and seascapes. Use the coastal water to your advantage. In this case we had perfect reflections but you can also have stormy waves and rough seas that also make for great subjects supporting your lighthouse in the frame.
