Ex-OPCW chief José Bustani defends the "extremely professional" inspectors who challenged the cover-up of their Syria probe, and voices alarm at them being sidelined and subjected to direct US pressure. "This would have never happened if I were Director-Deneral," Bustani says.

In this excerpt of our interview with José Bustani, the former Director General of the OPCW defends the inspectors who challenged the censorship of their investigation into an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria and voices alarm at how the probe was conducted.

Bustani, who worked with the inspectors during his tenure as the OPCW's first chief, describes them as "extremely professional and extremely reliable." He also expresses concern about a reported meeting where US officials lobbied the inspectors to reach a finding that would justify the pretext for the US-UK-France bombing Syria in April 2018, and at the fact that the inspectors who conducted the investigation on the ground in Syria were sidelined and replaced.

"This would have never happened if I were director-general," Bustani says.
