Funerary monuments have many types of imagery, much of it symbolic. The symbolism can range from the commonplace and easily understood to the abstruse, and in meaning from simple images the Christian cross) to complex allegorical programmes. This talk provides an introduction and, it is to be hoped, an encouragement to look more closely at what may sometimes be seen as the minor aspects of monuments. Originally delivered for the Church Monuments Society's All Hallows online lecture series on 23rd November 2024.
Dr Jean Wilson FSA spent her academic career teaching in universities in the UK and USA with a very short stint in China. She has published books on the court cults of Elizabeth I, and Shakespearean playhouses, but her main interest is early modern British monuments, to which she brings (she hopes) a late-twentieth-century feminist approach.
