Tarantella belongs to the cycle “Venezia and Napoli”, composed around 1840 and linked to the second book of Années de Pèlerinage. Originally, the Tarantella is a dance that appeared in the villages of Puglia during the 18th century, and spread all around the south of Italy afterwards. According to popular belief, the dance had therapeutic powers, since it could heal somebody from the tarantula’s bite. The dancer was generally accompanied by the accordion and the tambourine, and the music consisted of rhythmical formulas crotched-quaver, in a 6/8 measure, often followed by a flood of quavers. The uninterrupted character, rhythmical and insistent, could give this dance a frenetic aspect. It was believed that the dance had to please the tarantula that had bitten the unwell, in order to have a positive effect.

The Tarantella by Liszt has brilliant and imaginative writing with such rich and developed thematic ideas that we might give it the name of “Paraphrase”. In the first part – Tarantella, preceded by an introduction - the minor tonality, together with the great virtuosity, suggests an almost diabolic character. Liszt will expose three different Tarantella themes, which will be followed by a slow interlude, “Canzona Napolitana”: a dreamy song, almost continuous and pointed by abundant cadences. In the third part, Liszt comes back to the Canzona theme and covers it with astonishing harp colors, with formulas of ascendant and descendant arpeggios all played in the high register. Tarantella reappears in the 4th section, this time in the major mode and together with a more brilliant and exhilarating character.

Tarantella est extraite du cycle « Venezia e Napoli », composé autour de l’année 1840 et rattaché au 2e cahier des Années de Pèlerinage. Originellement la tarentelle est une danse apparue dans les villages de Pouilles au XVIII siècle puis répandue dans tout le sud d’Italie et qui, selon les croyances, avait des pouvoirs thérapeutiques car elle permettait de guérir un malade souffrant d'une morsure de tarentule. Le danseur était accompagné généralement à l’accordéon et au tambourin et la musique était une série de formules rythmiques noire-croche, dans une mesure à 6/8, souvent suivies d’un flot de croches. Le caractère ininterrompu, rythmé et insistant pouvait donner à cette danse un aspect frénétique. Toujours selon les croyances, il fallait que la danse plaise à l'araignée qui avait mordu le malade pour que la thérapie soit efficace… La Tarentelle de Liszt est d’écriture brillante, imaginative, si riche en idées thématiques et si développée qu’on pourrait presque lui donner le nom de Paraphrase. Dans sa 1e partie - Tarentelle, précédée d’une introduction - la tonalité mineure allié à la grande virtuosité d’écriture donne un coté presque diabolique. Liszt y exposera trois différents thèmes de Tarentelle qu’il fera ensuite suivre d’une partie lente, « Canzone Napolitana », un chant rêveur, presque ininterrompu et ponctué de nombreuses cadences. Dans la 3e partie, Liszt reprend le thème de la Canzone et l’habille d’étonnants couleurs de harpe grâce aux formules d’arpèges ascendants et descendants jouées en haut du registre. La Tarentelle reviendra dans la 4e partie, cette fois en majeur et de caractère de plus en plus brillant et jubilatoire.
