As we prepared to complete our IFR flight into Champaign, the traffic conditions changed. We were number one and cleared for the RNAV (GPS) Approach on Runway 14 Right.
However, as we chugged into a headwind, a regional jet with a load of passengers dropped into Champaign’s airspace at 400 knots. Slightly faster than our 80 knots,
Therefore, the radar controller cancelled our approach clearance and climbed us back to 4,000 feet. This allowed the passenger plane to zip underneath us and land at the airport.
As for us, we were issued a holding pattern at the initial approach fix, REDDD. We were issued a holding pattern northwest of REDDD, complete with a time check and an expect further clearance time. We copied the information, but our read back of the holding instructions probably sounded like a dumpster fire.
That being said, we did one circuit in the holding instructions probably and were then cleared back in on the GPS approach. It was good practice and a reminder that sometimes the unexpected pops up in the IFR world.
