Electrifying aluminium - Europe’s path to industrial decarbonisation

In this video, Konstantinos Kollias, Industrial Transformation Manager at European Aluminium, explains why accelerating electrification across the aluminium value chain is a critical step towards climate neutrality and long-term competitiveness.

While primary aluminium smelting already runs on electricity, large parts of the value chain — including alumina refining, remelting, extrusion and rolling — still rely heavily on natural gas. Expanding electrification across these processes could unlock significant emissions reductions while reinforcing Europe’s clean manufacturing base.

However, major challenges remain. High investment costs, technologies still under development, constrained grid capacity and electricity prices that are significantly higher than in competing regions continue to slow progress.

To make industrial electrification possible at scale, Europe will need reliable and affordable low-carbon electricity, stronger and modernised grids, and targeted funding to support industrial deployment.

The upcoming EU Electrification Action Plan will be decisive. Europe must ensure that electrification policies deliver competitive power prices and create the conditions needed for strategic industries such as aluminium to decarbonise and thrive.
