Interior designer, Emma Martin, takes a look at some antique lighting and vintage lighting with antiques expert, David Harper, at Newark Antiques Fair.
The lighting that Emma particularly takes an interest in is a wooden based, square light, which David goes on to tell us is from the Art Deco period. The term Art Deco was introduced in 1925, so the style originated after the First World War, there wasn't much being made between 14 and 18 because of the War there was a new look and this kinda of angular shape became popular.
Then the Paris and Art Deco Fair in 1925 kicked off, causing an explosion in this style, so they referred to it as Art Deco, after the Art Deco Fair. This light is definitely pre the Second World War, but it definitely screams the Art Deco period!
Is that the thing that Emma was drawn to? She says it was a bit of both, it's the history and the design. Light is very difficult, because it has to work functionally, but why not make it decorative at the same time?
David and Emma then go on to talk about the quality of it, it's been used for around 80 years and it's still in excellent quality.
